Mexican Candy Shot Recipe

Is it sweet? Is it spicy? Well, it’s both. The Mexican candy shot recipe mixes both flavors perfectly. This drink is inspired by a popular Mexican watermelon candy that is dusted with chile powder. Sounds yummy, right?

A very popular brand to try is made by the Lucas Candy Company. Very easily found online and through places like Walmart.com, Amazon, or other online grocery store. A center of a Lucas candy can vary, but most of the time, the candies have a sweet outer layer and a spicy inner layer.

Traditionally, this drink calls for watermelon juice, but feel free to use any pink juice. Think strawberry, guava, or raspberry juice. Let’s start off with the traditional Mexican Candy shots recipe. It’s a very popular drink, especially around the Mexican border.

Traditional

  • 2 oz tequila
  • 4 oz watermelon juice
  • Hot sauce (tabasco) to taste
  • For rim: sugar and lime juice or wedge
  • Garnish: Lime wedge (or slice of passion fruit)
  1. Rim edge of glass with lime and dip into sugar
  2. Add tequila, juice, and hot sauce to a cocktail shaker filled with ice, shake
  3. Strain into glass – garnish

If you want to serve as a shot, omit the sugared rim.

If you want to skip the fruit juice, try this version:

  • 1 oz tequila
  • 1 oz watermelon pucker – feel free to substitute watermelon schnapps.
  • 2 dashes hot sauce

How about Mexican candy Jello shots?

  • 8 oz hot water
  • 3 oz watermelon Jello

Of course, this version is closely related to the famous pa-leta shot. It is inspired by the sweet and spicy flavors of the other drinks but has a mix of mango with the addition of hot sauce.

  • fresh lime juice
